Skirts and dresses with built-in shorts were originally made for tennis, but people like to wear them for golf, running, and even lifting, too. (Or, you know, running weekend errands when it’s hot outside.) Cult-favourites include ones by Girlfriend Collective, Adidas, Nike, Abercrombie, and Slazenger – and we’ve found all the best picks ahead of warmer weather.
The word “skort” is a combination of “skirt” and “shorts,” so the clue’s in the name. This is a dreamy combo piece of kit – the skirt provides a range of motion (and extra coverage, if lycra shorts feel a tad too revealing to you), and the shorts underneath ensure your modesty is protected while you hop around the court. Isn’t that a tennis skirt, you ask? Well, sometimes – but traditional tennis skirts don’t necessarily always have built-in shorts. Plus, the sides of the stretchy, tight shorts are a handy spot for storing spare tennis balls, and many of them come with slip pockets to hold a mobile phone or car keys.
If you prefer an all-in-one situation, there are plenty of retailers who have your back. Abercrombie & Fitch’s “Traveler Dress” (sic) is somewhat of a social media sensation – women praise it for taking them from tennis to the gym and everywhere in between, in comfort. Sweaty Betty also does a “Power Dress,” which is currently 20% off in the spring sale. And editor-favourite brand Reformation happens to make some very chic active dresses with built-in shorts, too.
Sweaty Betty’s multi-use skort is ace for training, tennis, running, or just staying comfy running weekend errands. It’s made with breathable, sweat-wicking fabric, and comes in four colours. One five star review called it the “perfect tennis skort.” High praise indeed.
If you love a skort, don’t sleep on Nike’s great selection. They’ve got classic black and white styles, but also patterns, bright colours, and trend-led styles that would blend in easily with your everyday wardrobe. This style is lightweight, stretchy, and made with at least 75% recycled materials.
Girlfriend Collective, the label famed for its ultra-comfy activewear, chic colour combos, and inclusive sizing, also happens to do a great summer skort. Matches Fashion stocks the black version up to a size XXL, but you can shop nine other colours up to a size 6X on the Girlfriend Collective site, if you’re willing to wait for overseas shipping. This has built-in compressive shorts, hidden pockets, and side slits.
Our favourite bit about this skort? Pockets! There’s a slit pocket concealed on the thigh of the shorts, plus an envelope style pocket on the back. There is no front seam on the shorts, to avoid them riding up or chafing. Nike’s Flex fabric will move with your body, and the pleats provide added range of motion. We’re sold.
You might think of Americana, varsity-inspired logo jumpers when you think of A&F, but they’ve got great activewear as well. Case in point: the social media favourite “Traveler Dress.” It has built-in shorts with a hidden slit pocket for your phone, and adjustable straps. Plus, it comes in a whopping eleven stylish colours, so you can take your pick. We’ll be wearing ours around town on the weekends.
Lululemon’s Pace Rival skort is designed with both tennis and running in mind. It comes in a huge range of colours, in sizes 4 to 24, which we are very here for. The shorts have drop-in side pockets, plus a secure back pocket. This is a mid-rise skirt (great if you find that higher-rise options dig in), and it comes in lightweight, sweat-wicking fabric. Helllooo, four-way stretch.

Lulu’s Court Rival skort is one of the most flattering we’ve seen, thanks to the bias cut flutter hem. It’s shorter on the sides, which gives a leg-lengthening effect. A dual-entry pocket in the shorts fits both a tennis ball and your phone – win, win. This style is high-rise, and is made with Luxtreme™ mesh panels for ventilation.
