Yoga is an integral part of the mental and physical lifestyle not only in modern life but since ancient times.
On December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga to raise awareness worldwide of the many the significance and advantages of practicing Yoga.
The proposal to UNGA was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature”, he said during the address.
The theme for this year’s Yoga Day celebrations is ‘Yoga for Humanity’. It was celebrated for the first time on June 21, 2015, at the UN Visitor’s Plaza.
On this 8th edition of Yoga Day, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN is displaying ‘The World of Yoga’ exhibition at the UN Delegates’ entrance from June 21 to July 1, 2022.
The digital exhibition offers a glimpse into the annual celebrations of the Day and presents a standardized set of Yoga practices, called the ‘Common Yoga Protocol’. The protocol is available in several languages.
All the five Consulates of India in the US — New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, and San Francisco, have held various programs to celebrate the day.

The app is available for free download on Android devices, and Apple devices. It is an easy-to-use and free tool for both people who are trying yoga for the first time or those who already practice yoga regularly.
