Former Indian cricketer and ex-Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced to a year’s rigorous imprisonment on May 20, 2022, based on a petition. In doing so, the SC overturned its own decision from four years ago when Sidhu had been let off with a fine of Rs 1,000 for the death of a 65-year-old man, whom he had assaulted in a 1988 road rage case.

Due to his underlying health conditions, Sidhu has been prescribed a special diet by Lakshita Jain a clinical dietician and founder of health clinic Nutr. Jain told News9 that a team of doctors and dieticians were consulted before putting Sidhu on a rigorous diet. “Sidhu has been given the diet after an analysis of his health. He already had underlying conditions including high cholesterol, gastric and severe liver concerns. Upon his request, doctors have analysed his condition and prescribed this 7-fold diet plan which would be recommended to any other person who has the same health conditions as well,” she said.
His diet consists: Rosemary tea in the morning which Jain says is ideal for liver detoxification. “If you have this tea before your meals, it helps the liver to detoxify (cleanses the liver). Additionally, Sidhu is being given nuts that are rich in omega-3 which also helps in mitigating the burning sensation in the body of a patient who suffers from gastric problems. Nuts are also rich in vitamins and minerals like zinc, potassium and phosphorus,” Jain explained.

He is also being given different kinds of fruit and vegetable juices. “These can be given first thing in the morning preferably with breakfast. According to Sidhu’s routine, the timings for his meals have to be set. For lunch, he is served gluten-free chapati. Given that he may have stomach-related issues, going gluten-free can be beneficial. However, this is not advisable for all. Along with this, green leafy vegetable and raita completes four basic foods since he is also being given chickpea,” Jain said.

At night, he is given chamomile tea for better sleep. In the evening, Sidhu is served with milk, paneer or tofu. “This is a well-balanced diet given his health issues that complete the seven categories of foods that a person needs,” Jain said.

The Model Prison Manual 2016 says that state governments can prescribe diet allocations for prisoners based on guidelines that have been issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research. The manual lays down the specific amount of calories that inmates need to be given – 2,320-2,730 k/cal per day for a male prisoner and from 1900 k/cal to 2,230 k/cal for a woman prisoner.

The diet of an inmate must include 600 gm of cereals, 100 gm of pulses, 250 gm of vegetables, 100 gm of fish or meat per head twice a week or in its place 500 ml milk, 15 gm of ghee or 100 gm of groundnut. The diet also lays down the quantity of sugar and salt for each inmate. This is based on the dietary and nutritional requirements needed in Indians.

Jain said that for an inmate who doesn’t have underlying conditions, the above diet is perfect. “The portion size given to those who have no health issues is well planned for. However, if he or she has a medical condition, the seven categories of food need to be adjusted. Food groups need to be either increased or decrease according to the health of the person. For example, I would recommend five servings of fruit to a normal person; to a diabetic three. But this is not possible in a prison. Here the need is to counsel the inmate to make small changes in the diet that he is being given. In other words, the diet of an inmate with health issues can be customised and must be customised,” Jain said.
