Licking Heights students find relaxation, calming center through yoga – The Newark Advocate

Each Friday in the Licking Heights Middle School (LHMS) weight room, mats are spread out and interested students are directed through a series of yoga and “mindfulness habits” to help them relax and regulate their emotions.
There are four sessions offered each Friday, variously led by Sharon Ross, Morgan Baehr, Madison Simon and Alyson Lyle. Students who choose to participate do so during their intervention and enrichment (or IE) periods.
“The Youth Yoga Project was something that we introduced last year, and wanted to bring back again this year,” LHMS Principal Kevin Tooson said. “This is huge. We have athletes participating — football and basketball players and other athletes. They see the value in it. It’s good to be able to regulate and center ourselves.”
Eighth Grade Counselor Morgan Baehr said the yoga sessions began in a virtual setting last year because of COVID-19. This year, the program is fully in-person and will continue throughout the remainder of the school year.
School-offered yoga started in Columbus, according Seventh Grade Counselor Sharon Ross, and several of the Licking Heights school counselors were trained for yoga instruction.
Currently, each of the four Friday LHMS sessions typically draw between five to 12 students. “I’m really pleased with how it’s going,” Ross said.
During the classes, the lights are dimmed and soothing music is played while students are directed through various breathing and stretching exercises and yoga positions.
Echoing Principal Tooson, Ross said that student athletes find value in the exercises and some have been surprised at how challenging some of the yoga positions can be in the early going.
Yoga is also offered in other Licking Heights Schools. For instance, for the past two years, South Elementary Counselor Lindsey Das has produced yoga classes offered via Zoom for the entire student body.

  1. Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the images on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.
