Nestled in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, our liver performs more than 500 functions in a day. From producing bile juice for the digestion of food to removing toxins from the blood, its role majorly comprises processing everything you eat and drink in a day. Apart from this, the liver also takes an active part in the body’s metabolic and synthetic functions. Being such a vital part of the human body, maintaining liver health is your prime responsibility as any hindrance in the functioning of the liver can lead to disturbance in the working of the entire body. There are several factors that can affect your liver health and the most common one is your lifestyle habits. So, if you intend to keep your liver healthy you need to tweak your way of living. Here are six tips to improve your liver’s health.
The simplest way to take care of your liver is by eating right and healthy. Veggies and fruits are loaded with nutrients that can help to boost your internal health and promote overall well-being. The more colours you will add to your diet, the more nutrients you will get and the better will be your liver health. Avoid refined products, sugar, junk and processed food.
An overweight or obese person is more prone to developing chronic diseases that include liver-related ailments. Excessive body weight puts pressure on the organ and also forces them to work harder. There is also an increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. A healthy weight can help increase the efficiency of the liver and keep you at the pink of your health.

If you are a heavy drinker or you have a family history of liver-related issues, get yourself tested to know about the risk of liver damage. Early detection can help to prevent the condition before it turns severe. It is particularly important for those who are :
Pregnant
On hemodialysis
Has HIV
Ever used injectable illegal drugs
Stuck by an infected needle
Has had an abnormal liver test or liver disease

Unprotected sex can also put you at risk of hepatitis, a condition that leads to liver inflammation. The worst part is difficult to detect in the early stage, leading to a delay in the treatment. There are five main types of the hepatitis virus – A, B, C, D and E. Hepatitis B and C can be transmitted through unprotected sex or getting intimate with multiple partners.

If you are on medication for any health conditions or are taking any kind of supplements, make sure you take the dose as prescribed by the doctor. Excessive and prolonged intake of any medication can lead to long term liver damage. If you witness any side effects after taking any medication like rashes and nausea, talk to your doctor.

To cut down the risk of liver damage, get yourself vaccinated for hepatitis A and hepatitis B. It might be particularly important for those with a weak immune system or who are more prone to develop liver-related problems in the future. Talk to your doctor before making any decision.
